Coalition of Pro-Life Groups Tell FDA to Not Approve Ella Abortion Drug

Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- A coalition of pro-life groups is sending a letter to the FDA and Drug Administration asking it to not approve the new abortion drug Ella that backers have mislabeled as a morning after pill. The drug works days after conception to essentially cause an abortion of a unique human being.

Though the drug is more effective in delaying ovulation than other over the counter drugs available in the nation, the critics of Ella contend that the pill is more an abortion drug than a contraceptive pill.

Supporting their argument, the critics stated that Ella is chemically similar to abortion drug Mifeprex, and it also helps prevent implantation of the fertilized embryo.

Women for America president Wendy Wright compared Ella to RU-486 am abortion pill, which was “approved without adequate trials and even with restricted distribution has resulted in thousands of complications including deaths." Source: The Money Times 07/28/10

Women wouldn't be taking this pill if they wanted a baby, so I doubt they'd be terribly concerned about a 5 day blastocyst.....smaller than a grain of rice at 4 weeks.....

Too bad they don't care as much about all the "unique human beings" who have already been born and are now starving to death around the world.

Somebody needs to pay attention to the science instead of going immediately into hysterical fearmonger mode.

Can Ella Cause Abortion?

Ella belongs to a class of drugs called selective progesterone receptor modulators. The only other approved drug in this class is mifepristone, better known as RU-486. Mifepristone is approved for use as part of a regimen that induces abortion.

Because it is better absorbed by the body than mifepristone, Ella can be used at low doses that prevent conception but that should not cause abortion.

As usual the control freaks make their voices heard and demand things of government - that same government that most of them want to be smaller when it comes to regulating business BUT bigger when it comes to the individual's personal life & choices.

Darreth, there are some days when I prefer my dog over my kids so I know exactly what you are saying LOL. It amazes me that people are so concerned about something that does not affect them at all. It makes me angry that these people have a right to insinuate themselves into an issue that is private. A woman's reproductive life is none of the business of anyone but her & her SO. But they calmly accept Health Insurance companies denying coverage to ill people so they can maximize their profits - and they think this is ok. Health insurance companies can lead to the death of people by denying coverage for treatment that a person cannot afford & the person can die, but that's ok but heaven forbid for a woman to use BC or choose to terminate a pregnancy. And they keep thrusting the word moral around as the reason for their stance BUT is the health insurance industry moral - BUT they support that.
